Slap-bang in the middle of the Lanes, the Black Lion is a lively late-night venue, with a cavern-like feel. Early in the week, you can expect to find live music and staff with great taste in what to play and when. From Thursday onwards, some of the best DJs in Brighton spin rare vinyl spanning from '60s Motown and Northern Soul, Funk, Ska, Mod Revival, '80s Anthems, Hip Hop, Breaks, Electronica, Punk, Rock and classic and modern Indie.
The Black Lion is a fine example of a pub that manages to constantly and seemingly effortlessly transform itself from busy day to busy night, almost without you noticing. But however busy it gets, it retains a friendly atmosphere and, with comfy sofas, free wireless internet connection and photography by local artists on the walls, it's worth a visit day or night.
They also do an excellent food menu which offers everything from simple jacket potatoes and the like to gourmet dishes more typically associated with a good restaurant than a pre-club bar. Drinks-wise, they’ve got a good range of whiskies and serve mulled wine in the winter; during the summer you’re better off taking the rays out in the sun-drenched beer garden. With Jamie Oliver opening a brand new eatery just down the street, this part of town is on the up, with the Black Lion at centre stage.
